15-yo British girl, missing, after meeting 49-yo man on-line

The latest incident that happened in England involved a 15 year old girl, Laura Stainforth who allegedly met a Robert Williams, a 49 year old man on-line and communicated with him over a 6 months period on MSN.

The danger of the Internet is pretty much still prevalent despite whether the girl is from a broken home or not. This is a case of “grooming”, where an older adult slowly talked a younger person into running away with him. Read more here.

Parents need to be more vigilant on what their children are doing on-line especially who their are chatting with on social networking sites, IRC chat rooms or Yahoo! or MSN private chats.

You can turn on logging to record all the chats that went on and review them regularly. It’s more difficult to do so with SNS like Facebook or Myspace though. Perhaps, FB or Myspace allow parents to “piggy-back” into their children’s profile as well.

Meaning they can monitor the email communication that went on there with their children consent, of course.
