White House IT Security in the Dark Ages?

WashingtonPost reported that new Obama staffs encountered 6 year-old Microsoft software and few laptops when they reported to work.

Interesting to note is, there are also no access to:
1/ Facebook
2/ Instant Messaging
3/ No outside email

Obviously, they can’t expect to have access to all this since security is surely a high priority in a place like the White House. Having said that, there must be a balance between too much security and getting the job done quickly without compromising on basic security.

Already, exceptions has already been given to the officials of the press office, where Gmail accounts were allowed to be created as a temporary measure until things settle down.

Looks like a time for change has come to update the White House IT Security Policy as well.
